When police officers pull a driver over in the U.S., they may briefly touch the back or taillight of the vehicle before approaching the driver. According to former trooper Steve Montiero, the gesture can help ensure the trunk is closed and, traditionally, leaves the officer’s fingerprints on the car in case something goes wrong during the traffic stop. However, this is not a universal police practice, and modern body and dash cameras now provide additional documentation.
