A suddenly red, swollen and painful eyelid in a child is often caused by a common stye, but insect bites, allergies, blocked glands and infections can look similar. For a simple stye, a clean warm compress for 10–15 minutes several times a day may help, but the lump should never be squeezed or pierced. Fever, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, spreading redness, difficulty opening the eye or vision changes require prompt medical attention.
