The haunting human figures at Pompeii are often mistaken for people who were literally turned to stone when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., but that is not what happened. The famous figures are plaster casts created from hollow spaces left behind after victims’ bodies decomposed beneath volcanic material. Archaeologists filled these cavities with plaster to preserve the shapes and positions of the victims, creating the lifelike forms visitors see today. The technique, pioneered by Giuseppe Fiorelli in the 19th century, remains one of Pompeii’s most remarkable archaeological discoveries.
