Former U.S. Marine and retired firefighter Joe Belgio, 44, is suing an Illinois steakhouse, alleging that a contaminated raw oyster he ate during a family dinner in July 2025 triggered a severe illness, cardiac arrest and oxygen deprivation that caused permanent brain damage. His attorneys say he now requires extensive medical care and may need round-the-clock assistance, while the restaurant denies that its food caused his condition and says its investigation found no connection. A fundraiser for Belgio’s ongoing medical expenses has reportedly raised more than $91,000 as the legal dispute continues.
