In January 2024, an approximately 87-year-old Asian elephant named Somboon was rescued and transferred to Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand after decades of demanding labor in industries like logging and tourism. Upon her arrival, she drew international attention by lying down almost immediately to sleep deeply on a soft sand bed prepared specially for her. Despite age-related challenges such as mobility issues and needing assistance to stand back up, Somboon’s remaining years shifted away from forced work toward dedicated care that prioritized her comfort, nutrition, and well-being.
