The haunting “bodies” seen at Pompeii are not actually people who were turned to stone by Mount Vesuvius. When the volcano erupted in 79 A.D., victims were buried under layers of volcanic material that hardened around their bodies; after the remains decomposed, hollow cavities were left behind. In the 19th century, archaeologists led by Giuseppe Fiorelli filled these cavities with plaster, creating detailed casts that captured the victims’ final positions. Modern techniques such as CT scanning can reveal even more about the remains, making the casts one of Pompeii’s most remarkable archaeological discoveries….
