In February 2017, Florida passerby Ashad Russell, 35, was formally cleared of criminal charges after shooting and killing 53-year-old Edward Strother during an alleged attack on Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy Dean Bardes on Interstate 75. Authorities said Strother had pinned and repeatedly punched the deputy during a traffic stop, and Russell intervened after seeing the struggle, warning Strother to stop before firing three shots. The State Attorney’s Office determined that Russell was legally justified in using deadly force to prevent the deputy from suffering imminent death or serious bodily harm, although Strother’s brother disputed the characterization of Russell as a hero….
