In 2017, Florida man Ashad Russell, 35, was cleared of criminal charges after shooting and killing 53-year-old Edward Strother, who authorities said was attacking Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy Dean Bardes during a traffic stop on Interstate 75. Russell, who had a concealed weapons license, intervened after seeing Strother pinning and repeatedly punching the deputy, and Bardes reportedly told him to shoot. Russell fired three times, killing Strother, and the State Attorney’s Office later determined the shooting was legally justified because he reasonably believed deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent death or serious injury to the deputy.
