A Horrible Smell Led Me To A Weird Red, Slimy Object In My Garden… See more

Early one morning, a gardener stepped outside after a rainy night and encountered a foul odor near the flowerbeds.

Near the flowers lay a strange, pale, jelly-like object with bright reddish tendrils pushing through its center.

Repulsed by the rotting smell, the homeowner wondered if it was a dead animal, a parasite, or an unknown creature.

After taking photos and searching online, the homeowner discovered the mysterious growth was actually a type of fungus.

Known as a stinkhorn, this unusual fungus emerges from an egg-like sac and produces a strong, rotting odor.

The foul smell intentionally attracts flies and other insects, which carry and spread the fungus’s spores to new locations.

Despite its unsettling appearance, the stinkhorn fungus is completely harmless to humans and domestic pets.

These fungi thrive in moist soil, decaying wood, compost, or garden mulch following warm, rainy weather.

Stinkhorns typically wither away within a day or two, though they can reappear when moist soil conditions persist.

What initially seemed alarming proved to be a fascinating reminder of the natural world’s strange and unexpected creations.
