The Pembroke OPP station at 77 International Dr. has designated areas marked with a handshake symbol to serve as community safety zones for online marketplace transactions. Launched under “Project Safe Trade,” these public spots are designed to keep buyers and sellers safe by moving transactions out of private homes and isolated spaces.

The secure trading locations are open 24/7 without needing an appointment, making them especially useful during busy shopping seasons. OPP Commander Steph Neufeld highlighted that this initiative aims to decrease marketplace-related crimes, lessen harm, and prevent community members from becoming victims of fraud or theft.

To ensure extra safety during meetups, police recommend meeting in busy public places, bringing a trusted witness, and completing transactions during daylight hours. It is also important to save all communications—such as emails, texts, and voicemails—between yourself and the buyer or seller.

Technology analyst Carmi Levy advises doing background research on the seller’s past transactions before agreeing to meet. Additionally, always inspect high-value items like electronics in person to verify they power on and work properly before handing over any money.
