In 2003, British peacekeeper Wayne Ingram met 4-year-old Bosnian boy Stefan Savic, who was born with a severe facial cleft that threatened his eyesight and life. Deeply moved, Ingram spent the next 13 years raising more than $215,000 through countless fundraising efforts—including a 76-mile backward walk—to help Stefan receive five major operations, several performed free of charge at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Today, Stefan is 27, married, and performs with a folk band, while the extraordinary story remains a testament to one man’s determination to keep a promise and change a child’s life.
