In September 2011, white supremacist Lawrence Russell Brewer was executed in Texas for the 1998 hate crime murder of James Byrd Jr. Before his execution, he ordered an enormous final meal—including steaks, burgers, a pizza, and dessert—only to refuse to eat a single bite. Outraged by the stunt, Texas officials immediately abolished the long-standing tradition of special last-meal requests for all death row inmates.
