Massachusetts lobster diver Michael Packard survived an extraordinarily rare encounter in 2021 when he was briefly trapped inside the mouth of a humpback whale while diving off Cape Cod. Packard said he was suddenly engulfed in darkness and initially feared a shark attack, but soon realized he was inside the whale’s mouth. After roughly 30 seconds, the whale surfaced and expelled him, allowing his crewmate to pull him from the water and get him to the hospital. Packard suffered soft-tissue injuries but no broken bones, while marine experts said the encounter was most likely an accidental result of the whale feeding on fish, emphasizing that humpback whales are not known to intentionally attack humans.
