Our Toddler Had Screamed For Two Hours Straight On A Cross-Country Move. Then A Hotel Clerk Stepped In.

My wife and I were right in the middle of an exhausting cross-country move. By the time we pulled into a Hampton Inn parking lot around midnight, we were running on absolute fumes. To make matters worse, our toddler had been screaming at the top of his lungs for the last two hours of the drive. I probably looked like a zombie who hadn’t slept in days—mostly because I hadn’t.

We dragged ourselves to the front desk, fully prepared to just get the keys to the cheapest, smallest room we had booked and try to survive the night. But the young man behind the counter took one look at our frazzled faces, our tear-streaked kid, and the sheer exhaustion radiating off us.

Without saying a single word or asking for an extra dime, he immediately upgraded us to a massive family suite. Before we even finished unpacking our bags in the room, there was a knock at the door. He had sent up a tray of snacks from the kitchen, along with a note explaining that the kitchen was technically closed, but he had raided the pantry to find some things for us. He also went ahead and automatically extended our checkout time for the next morning so we wouldn’t have to rush.

When I went downstairs the next day and tried to slide him a tip for his incredible kindness, he waved his hand, smiled, and simply said, “Just get some sleep.” We ended up sleeping for eleven uninterrupted hours. I still think about that guy every single time I check into a hotel anywhere in the country.
