While cleaning a swimming pool, a homeowner spotted a strange, wriggling creature with a long trailing tail floating near the surface. Unsure of what it was, an hour-long internet search filled with fears of parasites and dangerous invasive species only heightened the initial panic.
The mystery was solved when the creature was identified as a rat-tailed maggot, the harmless larva of a beneficial hoverfly. Its terrifying “tail” is actually a snorkel-like breathing tube that extends to the surface, allowing the larva to survive in oxygen-poor water rich in decaying organic matter.
