Frank Hemani, the owner of a small convenience store near Lake Fork in East Texas, noticed that some people in his community were struggling to afford basic food. Instead of ignoring the problem, he decided to offer help in a very direct way.

He placed a sign near the store’s refrigerator that read: “If you don’t have money or a job you can have a sandwich and a bottle of water for free.” Hemani said he wanted people who were struggling to know they could come in without feeling ashamed.

He recalled seeing a woman arrive with two children who were hungry but had no money to buy them food. Rather than turning them away, he made them a pizza. He said he had been fortunate in his own life and wanted to help people who were having a difficult time.
