If Your Watermelon Has Deep Cracks Inside, Don’t… See more

Cutting open a watermelon to find large internal cracks or hollow spaces can be surprising, often leading people to assume the fruit has gone bad.

In reality, this common condition is known as “hollow heart” and typically develops while the watermelon is still growing in the field.

Hollow heart is usually caused by uneven growing conditions, such as rapid temperature shifts, inconsistent watering, or poor pollination during early development.

These environmental factors cause the internal flesh of the watermelon to separate and split apart as the fruit expands.

Fortunately, a watermelon with hollow heart remains perfectly safe to eat as long as it looks, smells, and tastes fresh.

While the texture of the flesh near the internal cracks may be slightly softer or less crisp, the splitting itself is not harmful.

However, if you notice a sour smell, slimy texture, mold, or a fermented taste, the watermelon has spoiled and must be discarded.

You should always rely on your senses to evaluate freshness rather than automatically throwing the fruit away based on cracks alone.

Most of the time, these internal cavities are simply a harmless, natural result of how the fruit grew under varying weather conditions.

A quick inspection for signs of spoilage is all that is required to safely enjoy the rest of the sweet watermelon.
