Hibiscus tea, also known as “Agua de Jamaica,” is a refreshing drink made from the dried flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa. It is especially popular in Mexico and other tropical and subtropical regions. The drink is naturally rich in plant compounds and antioxidants, which have attracted attention for their potential health benefits.
Research suggests that hibiscus tea may have several beneficial effects when consumed as part of a balanced diet. It has mild diuretic properties and may support digestion. Some studies have also found that hibiscus may help lower blood pressure in people with elevated blood pressure. Its antioxidant compounds may help protect cells from oxidative stress, although more research is needed to understand its full effects.
Hibiscus tea is also sometimes associated with cholesterol management and kidney health. However, claims that it can “purify” or clean the arteries and kidneys should be treated cautiously. The body’s kidneys and liver naturally remove waste from the body, and hibiscus tea should not be considered a treatment for clogged arteries, kidney disease, or high cholesterol.
To prepare it, boil about four cups of water, remove the pot from the heat, and add around half a cup of dried hibiscus flowers. Let the mixture steep for about 10 minutes, then strain it and add three cups of cold water. Sweeten to taste and serve chilled with ice and lemon. For a healthier option, use little or no added sugar.READ BELOW
