A family walk through the Australian bush turned into a terrifying near-miss when a mother later discovered that a large eastern brown snake had been lying just inches from her young son’s foot. The children and their mother had unknowingly walked past the highly venomous snake near Eskdale, Victoria, in 2019, only noticing it when they reviewed the photo afterward. Snake expert Barry Goldsmith said the incident highlights how well snakes can blend into their surroundings and stressed that they generally avoid people, but advised hikers to wear long pants and proper footwear, watch the ground carefully, and keep a distance of around two to three meters if a snake is spotted.
