I mistook it for a rope. Then I noticed what was actually happening in my garden.

We’ve all had that moment where our brain tricks us into seeing a snake in the grass, but what I found in my garden yesterday morning was actually much stranger. While stepping outside with my coffee, I spotted a long, dark, twisting shape coiling across the lawn. When I leaned in closer, my heart pounded as I realized it wasn’t a snake or a dropped rope at all. It was a pulsing, crawling chain of over 150 caterpillars marching in a perfect, single-file line without a single gap.

This fascinating behavior is known as a “caterpillar procession.” Most famously seen in species like the Pine Processionary caterpillar, this phenomenon also happens with native tent caterpillars and webworms. They move this way out of pure survival instinct when they leave their nests to find a place to transform into moths. The leader lays down a silk thread and releases special scents, while each caterpillar behind it uses its antennae to stay locked onto the one ahead. By sticking together in a tight line, they look like one massive, intimidating animal, which helps protect them from predators.

While it is a brilliant trick of nature, it is definitely a spectacle you want to admire from a distance. Many of these processing caterpillars have tiny, irritating hairs that can cause painful skin rashes or breathing issues if touched. They are especially dangerous for curious pets, as a dog sniffing or biting one can suffer from severe allergic reactions and painful mouth ulcers. If you ever spot one of these living chains, the best thing to do is leave them alone so they don’t get disoriented.

Eventually, this mysterious little army will disappear as quietly as it arrived, likely burrowing underground or finding a new tree to call home. It is a powerful reminder that you don’t need to visit a tropical rainforest to witness the wonders of nature. Sometimes, real magic is waiting right in your own backyard—even if it makes you scream a little bit at first.
